Japan must build new nuclear reactors and invest in hydrogen to drive down inflated energy costs and survive a global race to decarbonize economies, according to the head of the nation’s steel giant.

The domestic manufacturing industry will fall behind foreign rivals unless it can get access to cheaper, stable supplies of carbon-free energy, Nippon Steel Corp. President Eiji Hashimoto told a group of reporters in Tokyo on Thursday. Developing small, advanced types of new reactors will help Japan resolve the issue, he said.
