Tropical Storm Nicole Slams Into Bahamas as Florida Braces for Wind and Floods

Nicole has strengthened into a hurricane as it rolls over the Bahamas and churns toward Florida, where evacuations are underway amid the threat of powerful winds and a dangerous storm surge. 

The storm was about 105 miles (170 kilometers) east of West Palm Beach, Florida, with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, making it a Category 1 hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said in a statement at 6 p.m. local time.
