More people have died in the first 10 months of this year in New York City Department of Correction custody than all of last year, despite the new administration’s pledge to reverse the violent and dangerous conditions in the city’s jail system.

Erick Tavira, 28, died at the George R. Vierno Center on Rikers Island on Saturday. His apparent suicide, according to the New York Post, marks the 17th death this year either in the agency’s care or shortly after release. Last year, 16 people died last year at New York City jails.
