Franco-German relations showed signs of further strain as President Emmanuel Macron said Berlin risks isolation in Europe amid efforts to rein in surging power costs and his finance minister called for a “reset” to build a stronger alliance.

The bloc’s two largest economies typically seek to show unity and fine tune joint positions before meetings with their European Union counterparts, but as leaders convene for a summit in Brussels on Thursday, splits over how to tackle the energy crisis are proving too deep to gloss over.
