A storm in the southeast Caribbean is poised to reach tropical strength and potentially grow into a hurricane that’s on course to smash into Nicaragua this weekend.
The system, swirling north of Venezuela, has winds of 35 miles (56 kilometers) per hour and will likely become Tropical Storm Julia in the next day, according to the National Hurricane Center. It’s expected to become a Category 1 hurricane before it slams into Central America Sunday.
