With the exception of a few weeks at the start of 1985, the pound has never been weaker against the US dollar than it is today.
The fresh lows for sterling followed Wednesday’s decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates by another three-quarters of a percentage point. And while the currency rebounded slightly on Thursday after the Bank of England followed with its own half-point rate hike, the headwinds are unlikely to abate soon.
