Former Blackstone Inc. executive Bennett Goodman and his wife Meg spent the early days of the pandemic confined at home with their children, where their conversations frequently turned to philanthropy.

His three adult children argued their family foundation could make a bigger impact by concentrating on making a few large gifts to nonprofits that were trying to address disparities like income inequality rather than many smaller donations to groups that might not need the money as much.
