Nichelle Nichols, the Black actress who eroded racial stereotypes as Lieutenant Uhura in the 1960s science-fiction television series “Star Trek,” has died. She was 89.

The actress died of natural causes on July 30, her son, Kyle Johnson, posted on her Facebook page Sunday. Nichols, who had a stroke in 2015, died in Silver City, New Mexico, Variety reported.
