South Africa is considering almost doubling the threshold for poor people to obtain a monthly cash stipend, as they contend with consumer prices accelerating at the fastest pace in more than five years.
Draft government regulations published this week recommended that the limit be raised to 624 rand ($36). That’s South Africa’s food poverty line -- the amount of money a person needs to afford the minimum required daily energy intake.
