Australia’s Top Diplomat Heads to Pacific as China’s Wang Visits

Australia’s new Foreign Minister Penny Wong will head to the Pacific on Thursday for a visit which will coincide with the arrival of China’s State Councilor Wang Yi, an early indication of the new government’s intent to step up diplomatic efforts in the region.

Wong will head to Fiji for meetings with the Pacific nation’s prime minister and foreign minister, before delivering a speech in the capital Suva on Friday, according to a statement issued by her office. Wong will also meet the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Henry Puna.
