New York Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin resigned from office, after being charged with funneling illicit donations to one of his past campaigns.

The exit of Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul’s second-in-command is effective immediately, she said in a statement Tuesday. Hours before, Benjamin pleaded not guilty to bribery charges in federal court in Manhattan, after surrendering to law enforcement earlier in the morning. He was released on a $250,000 bond.
