Mexican voters overwhelmingly backed President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to finish his six-year term in a recall referendum Sunday set by the leader himself, but turnout was less than half the legal requirement for the vote to be binding.
Lopez Obrador took 91.9% of the votes, about 15.1 million people, according to preliminary results by the nation’s electoral institute, as of Monday morning. Turnout was 17.7% of eligible voters, slightly higher than what some analysts had expected.
