Chile’s Constitutional Assembly elected Maria Elisa Quinteros as its president on Wednesday, cementing leftist leadership in an institution that will deliver a new charter for a global financial market favorite.

The 155-member organization chose Quinteros, a dentist and researcher, as its new head in the ninth voting round after more than 15 hours of debate. She will guide the assembly ahead of a crucial July 5 deadline to conclude work on the constitution, which will be put to a referendum later in 2022.
