French soldiers who are part of a military convoy traveling from Burkina Faso in West Africa to Mali fired warning shots on Saturday to disperse a crowd that confronted them during a stopover in Niger.
Two people were killed and 18 injured when the convoy, escorted by military police, tried to leave, Nigerien authorities said in an emailed statement late Saturday. It wasn’t immediately clear who injured the protesters. An investigation is underway, according to the government statement.
