Hong Kong police on Friday warned democracy activists trying to commemorate China’s deadly Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 that they could be violating the sweeping national security law imposed by China.
Authorities had banned an annual June 4 vigil at the city’s Victoria Park, citing coronavirus concerns. But individual activists were attempting to mark the day on their own, or were gathering for smaller memorials and planned religious services. Activists came out even after a prominent organizer was arrested and police shut down the park to prevent mass protests.
