Only weeks after Poland’s nationalist government lost its biggest global ally in former U.S. President Donald Trump, France is stepping in to win part of the east European country’s $30 billion nuclear power project.

The biggest European Union nation without nuclear power after Italy, coal-dependent Poland has for years been on the prowl for a deal with the U.S and has hitched its hopes to American technology to strengthen its relationship with the Trump administration. But after the election of President Joe Biden, who may not be as supportive of Polish top politicians, French officials met with representatives in Warsaw with its own offer for nuclear cooperation.
