Last Month Was the Hottest May on Record

High temperatures reignited “zombie fires” that had been smoldering all winter in the Arctic

Last month was the warmest May on record, with some parts of Siberia, Alaska and Antarctica registering unusually high temperatures, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Global temperatures were 0.63 degrees Celsius (1.1 degree Fahrenheit) higher than average, according to the European agency’s monthly report. The 12-month period ending in May matched the warmest year on record and was almost 0.7 degrees Celsius hotter than normal.
