Spain is preparing to significantly reduce the distribution and sale of single-use plastic cutlery, straws, cups and products containing microplastics as part of the government’s drive to promote recycling and reduce waste.

The government wants to ban the sale of single-use plastics from July 3, 2021, and to ban the free distribution of these items from the start of 2023, according to a bill distributed to journalists. It’s due to approve the legislation at its weekly cabinet meeting on Tuesday before taking it to congress for full debate.
