With Latin America’s largest economy reeling from simultaneous health, political and economic crises, President Jair Bolsonaro has been quietly forging an alliance with a powerful group of centrist lawmakers he used to despise.

The deal, which entails congressional support in exchange for positions in the administration, for now may shield Bolsonaro from meaningful defeats in congress, as well as any impeachment attempts against him.
