Aimee Stephens, whose gender-identity discrimination case is awaiting a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, died Tuesday.

Stephens died of complications from kidney failure at her home in the Detroit area, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, which represented her. She was 59.
