Bill Gates thinks he can shake up the $65 billion market for nitrogen fertilizer.

Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures led a $100 million funding round for Bay Area startup Pivot Bio that will help scale up output of a technology that uses microbes to deliver nitrogen to corn. Temasek also participated. The Series C funding round just closed.
