An Egyptian military court said it sentenced to death a notorious Islamist militant captured in Libya who was responsible for attacks including an attempt on the then-interior minister’s life in 2013.

Hisham El-Ashmawy, a former Egyptian special forces officer, was also found guilty of participating in assaults on shipping in the Suez Canal and security installations in Ismailia in the same year, the court said in a statement. After fleeing to neighboring Libya, he was seized by that country’s eastern military in October 2018.
