With London’s housing market in the doldrums and 10-year gilt yields stuck below 1%, property investors are pushing an emerging asset class into the mainstream: alternative real estate.

Holdings like bingo halls, forests, and student dormitories make up a bigger proportion of British property investment than ever. More than 42% of all real estate investment in the U.K. was in such alternatives in the first quarter, according to broker Cushman & Wakefield Inc. That compares to 5% a decade ago.
