Fritz Hollings, Senator Who Fought Hunger and Deficit, Dies at 97

Ernest “Fritz” Hollings, who helped smooth integration in South Carolina before spending 38 years in the U.S. Senate as an advocate for impoverished Americans and a voice for restraint in government spending, has died.

A family spokesman confirmed Hollings’ death early Saturday at age 97, according to the Associated Press. No cause of death was given.
