Just 10 days after Venezuela managed to restore power to most residents following a week-long blackout, the lights went out again Monday. Following two hours of government silence, the information minister laid the blame for the fresh outage on an attack on the power grid.
Following the attack on the Guri hydroelectric plant, electricity had been restored to almost the entire country, Jorge Rodriguez said in televised remarks. The outage led the government-operated Caracas metro system to suspend service. National Assembly leader Juan Guaido, who is recognized as the country’s legitimate leader by roughly 50 countries, said on Twitter that 17 states were hit by the outage, with 57 percent of the country losing power.
