Newsprint magnate Peter Brant began collecting works by Jean-Michel Basquiat before the artist’s death from a drug overdose in 1988, amassing about 30 works over three decades.

Beginning Wednesday, some of his holdings will be available for public viewing as part of the inauguration of the New York branch of the Brant Foundation. The exhibition has about $1 billion worth of Basquiat paintings, according to dealers, with loans from billionaires Eli Broad, Francois Pinault and Dan Loeb as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Louis Vuitton foundation.
