Even with the labor market tight and economy booming, African American workers haven’t gotten raises as often as white employees or other groups, according to a survey by job site ZipRecruiter that polled 51,000 job seekers.

What’s more, black people and other minority groups say they’re especially wary of asking for more pay, saying they’re afraid it would make them vulnerable in the next downturn. About half of black and Hispanic workers, regardless of their employment status or pay level, said their biggest fear is losing their job, compared to 37 percent of white workers, according to the survey.
