The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, announced he’ll seek re-election to lead the regional organization for another five years as the political and economic crisis in Venezuela gets worse.

Almagro, whose term is set to expire in May 2020, said on TwitterBloomberg Terminal that he will run for a second consecutive term after receiving a key endorsement from the U.S. and allied countries. “Colombia and U.S. ambassadors have informed me of a joint proposal from a group of countries expressing support for my candidacy for re-election as Secretary General of the OAS,” Almagro wrote. “I have decided to accept this responsibility.”
