MercadoLibre, South America’s biggest e-commerce retailer, is ramping up its logistics system in Brazil as it looks to cut costs, boost reliability and fend off competition from Amazon.com Inc.

The investment will enable it to quadruple capacity in its largest market by the first quarter, said Leandro Bassoi, head of logistics unit MercadoEnvios. MercadoLibre is looking to reduce its reliance on the postal service CorreiosBloomberg Terminal, which raised its freight fees this year, and boost its autonomy after a truckers strike paralyzed the country for 10 days.
