France is investigating the disappearance of Interpol President Meng Hongwei, who is also a senior Chinese security official, a person familiar with the matter said Friday, as reports indicated that he may have been taken into custody in China.

The probe was opened by the prosecutor in Lyon, where Interpol is based, said the person, who asked not to be identified as the status of the case is confidential. Interpol acknowledged the reports about Meng, and said in an email that it “is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China.”
