Arizona’s governor picked former Republican Senator Jon Kyl, a Washington lobbyist who left Congress in 2013, to temporarily fill John McCain’s seat in the Senate, bolstering the chances for confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Kyl, 76, agreed to serve at least through the end of the year, Governor Doug Ducey told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday. He hasn’t committed to serving until 2020, when there would have to be a special election to fill the final two years of McCain’s term.
