Israeli troops killed three Palestinians, trading fire with gunmen in the Gaza Strip days after international mediators stepped in to prevent months of military confrontation from erupting into war.
Israeli tanks shelled Hamas militia posts in eastern Gaza, killing the three Palestinians, according to Ashraf al Qedra, spokesman for the Gaza health ministry. An Israeli soldier was lightly wounded and evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in nearby Beersheba, according to Hadashot television news. The army said in a tweet it shelled seven Hamas positions after Palestinian gunmen fired on its troops. It declined to confirm that a soldier was injured.
