Lyft Inc.’s purchase of Brooklyn, New York-based bike-share operator Motivate was the latest move in the high-stakes competition for the last mile of urban transport, according to a Bloomberg NEF report. Rides in the U.S. topped 35 million in 2017, and the number of bicycles in either docked or dockless systems has exceeded 100,000. The next frontier in mobility is e-scooters, which both Lyft and Uber Technologies Inc. hope to pilot in San Francisco.
