Traffic-related deaths grew by 20 percent in decade through 2016

As bike sharing becomes more popular and corporate policies encourage peddling to work, cyclist injuries are also on the rise in the U.S., with traffic-related deaths growing 20 percent between 2007-2016, according to National Highway Transportation Safety Administration statistics. More than 70 percent of fatalities occurred in urban areas, while daytime incidents slightly outnumbered those at night. Alcohol involvement -- on behalf of the motor vehicle driver or the bicyclist -- was reported in 35 percent of cases.
