WestJet Airlines Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Gregg Saretsky resigned unexpectedly as the Canadian carrier grapples with testy labor negotiations and attempts to create a new discount operation.

He will be replaced by Ed Sims, who joined the company about nine months ago.
