Canadians and Mexicans working in Wall Street’s research departments have a lot more to worry about than the next earnings season.

Financial firms operating in the U.S. have for years used the professional designation of “economist" to get so-called TN visas for research analysts from those countries under the North American Free Trade Agreement. That’s now changing, after U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services issued a Nov. 20 memo saying analysts aren’t economists and thus don’t qualify for the three-year renewable visas.
