For the third time this month, a hurricane is spinning toward the already battered Caribbean and gathering strength along the way.
The National Hurricane Center upgraded tropical storm Maria to a hurricane Sunday as winds picked up to 90 miles (150 kilometers) per hour by Monday morning. The storm, 100 miles east of Martinique, is intensifying, and hurricane warnings have been issued for the islands Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat. A hurricane watch has been issued for Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra, according to an advisory issued around 5 a.m. New York time.
