Toronto and its surrounding cities said they will compete in Amazon.com Inc.’s hunt for a second corporate headquarters in North America.

Toronto region municipalities joined forces to submit a regional bid for Amazon’s new site dubbed HQ2, and will work with the federal and provincial governments as well as area companies to fashion the proposal, the group said Wednesday in a statement. Seattle-based Amazon last week solicited proposals for the headquarters, a project that will cost more than $5 billion, and create 50,000 jobs over the next 15 to 17 years.
