French Communists Call for Single Melenchon-Hamon Candidacy

  • Communist leader Laurent reacts to Valls’s support for Macron
  • Leftists capable of winning election if they unite, he says

France’s Communist Party leader Pierre Laurent called Wednesday for a single candidacy uniting the far-left’s Jean-Luc Melenchon and Socialist contender Benoit Hamon.

“The conversion of Manuel Valls to the candidacy of Emmanuel Macron justifies such a candidacy," Laurent said in a statement on his party’s website. Valls, a Socialist and a former prime minister, said earlier Wednesday that he will vote for Macron rather than his party’s candidate.

Polls show that Macron is the most likely candidate to be left facing the National Front’s Marine Le Pen after the first round of voting on April 23. Hamon, currently trailing in fifth place, reacted to Vall’s statement by calling on Melenchon’s supporters to united behind him.

Laurent called upon Hamon, Melenchon and environmentalist Yannick Jadot who has already joined Hamon’s campaign, to meet in the coming days.
