Mondelez International Inc. bucked Russia’s recession to expand retail sales there by a “double-digit” percentage last year after starting to produce Oreo cookies as well as sweets blending chocolate and crackers, the company’s regional manager said.

“We launched Oreo at the end of 2015, and in less than a year it became the third-largest sweet biscuits brand in Russia,” Hossam Ashour, who oversees Mondelez’s business in Eastern Europe, said in a phone interview. Oreo’s market share in Russia reached 5 percent last year, behind Mondelez’s Jubilee and Orion Corp.’s ChocoPie, according to market researcher Nielsen.
