Last month featured more than its fair share of political excitements, as Donald Trump arrived in the White House. Yet it was resolutely boring for U.S. stocks, with one-month realized volatility on the S&P 500 coming in at 6.51 as the index moved steadily higher. In records going back to 1928, there have only been four other times when the year has begun so calmly -- and none of those witnessed the inauguration of a first-time president.
