Konami Climbs as Smartphone Soccer Game Downloads Hit 4 Million

  • Company’s shares rose to the highest since July in Tokyo
  • Jikkyou Powerful Soccer topped download rankings in Japan

Konami Holdings Corp. shares climbed to their highest since July after the Japanese game maker said its smartphone soccer title was downloaded more than 4 million times in two weeks since its debut.

The shares rose as much as 4.8 percent to 4,485 yen in Tokyo trading, the highest intraday price since July 14. Konami’s Jikkyou Powerful Soccer, a free-to-play title, was released on iOS and Android devices on Dec. 7. It was the most downloaded game on Apple Inc.’s devices in Japan for a week following the launch, according to market researcher App Annie.

The game is a spinoff on Konami’s successful baseball series, which remained among Japan’s top 100 most downloaded mobile games since its release two years ago. The Tokyo-based company is also the maker of Winning Eleven, a soccer simulator. The success of the mobile title helps offset the blow dealt by last year’s departure of Hideo Kojima, the creator of the popular Metal Gear Solid series.
