Cowen Hires Former Jefferies Executive for Securities Finance

  • Matt Baldassano to report to equities chief Dan Charney
  • Baldassano was head of securities finance at Jefferies

Cowen Group Inc. hired Matt Baldassano, a long-time Jefferies Group banker, to start a securities-finance business.

Baldassano will be based in New York and report to Dan Charney, head of equities, Cowen said Monday in a statement. He had worked at New York-based Jefferies from 2007 through February, according to Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records.

“Establishing a securities finance capability is a natural complement to Cowen’s prime services business, which was established last fall,” Charney said in the statement.

At Jefferies, Baldassano was head of global securities finance. Before that, he was global co-head of securities lending at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and worked for what was then the Pershing division of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.
