The cost of linking Germany’s wind turbines in the north with its biggest industrial users in the south is ballooning after the government said the main cable needs to be buried underground.

Tennet TSO GmbH, one of the grid operators building the Suedlink, estimates the total bill will rise to 10 billion euros ($11.3 billion) from 3 to 4 billion euros forecast earlier, the Bayreuth, Germany-based company said by e-mail Thursday. The additional work will delay the first flows on the cable by three years to 2025, grid regulator Bundesnetzagentur said on its website last week.
