Katharina Miller attends the shareholder meetings of almost every big Spanish company, and after others ask about dividends and earnings, she poses a question to what is invariably a male-dominated dais: Why are there so few women on the board?

At the annual gathering of Abertis Infraestructuras in Barcelona on April 12, she stood in front of 11 male and five female directors and, as always, stressed that she’s not asking as a gender activist, but as an investor interested in protecting her returns.
