Hydroelectric dams may be touted as “green” sources of renewable power but they are far from benign, according to a new study.
Creation of the Balbina hydropower dam in Brazil’s Amazon, one of the world’s largest in terms of total flooded area, caused large-scale biodiversity loss and long-lasting environmental damage, said authors of the study, published Wednesday in PLOS ONE, a venture of the nonprofit Public Library of Science.
