Australia Welcomes Unesco Decision on Great Barrier Reef

Australia’s government breathed a sigh of relief after Unesco’s World Heritage Committee upheld a May decision that keeps the Great Barrier Reef from being listed as endangered.
“The world’s umpire has declared the Great Barrier Reef is not in danger,” Environment Minister Greg Hunt said Wednesday in a statement after the committee met in Bonn, Germany. “It is Australia’s greatest natural icon and remains the world’s Great Barrier Reef.”
