South Africa’s High Court said the government violated the law when it ignored a court order to bar Sudanese President Umar al-Bashir from leaving the country and urged state prosecutors to consider criminal proceedings.
Judge Dunstan Mlambo handed down the judgment Wednesday at a hearing in Pretoria, the capital. Al-Bashir left South Africa on June 15 in defiance of a High Court order that the government stop his departure while it considered arresting him under an International Criminal Court indictment on war-crimes and genocide charges.
