On Tuesday night, the Public Theater gathered supporters for an al fresco dinner before a performance of “The Tempest,” Shakespeare’s play set on an island of singing spirits. It called to mind the strange, wonderful qualities of the island of Manhattan and the gala itself.

“This is my favorite event in New York,” Barry Rosenstein, a hedge-fund manager, said under a canopy of trees bathed in warm evening sunlight.
