An unusual and grim snapshot

The Centers for Disease Control has released an interesting graphic that reveals the "most distinctive" cause of death in each state. By "distinctive," they essentially mean where the rate of the death for that particular cause is highest, relative to the national average.
For example, Oklahoma accounted for 24 percent of all the U.S. deaths for “other acute ischemic heart diseases,” despite having only slightly more than 1 percent of the nation's population. By removing the most common causes of death nationwide, like cancer and heart disease, it provides a unique look at where certain issues stick out and also highlights how different states have different standard for certifying deaths.
